Objective:
- Students will be able to identify the stages of the plant life cycle.
- Students will be able to describe what a seed needs to grow into a plant.
- Students will be able to explain the process of photosynthesis.
- Students will be able to identify the importance of plants to animals and humans.
Materials:
- Reading Comprehension Passage and Quiz: “The Seed” (included in lesson plan)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Chart paper and markers (buy)
- Construction paper (buy)
- Glue (buy)
- Scissors (buy)
- Pencils (buy)
- Seed packets (buy)
- Soil (buy)
- Cups (buy)
Procedure:
Introduction:
- Begin the lesson by asking the students what they know about plants. Write their responses on the whiteboard.
- Introduce the topic of the plant life cycle and explain that all plants go through a life cycle, just like animals.
- Show the students the seed packets and ask if anyone knows what is inside. Explain that a seed is the first stage of a plant’s life cycle.
Reading Comprehension:
- Hand out the reading comprehension passage and quiz: “The Seed”.
- Give the students time to read the passage silently, into ability groups or heterogeneous groups, or guided reading groups.
- Review the quiz questions and answer any questions the students may have.
Group Activity:
- Divide the class into small groups.
- Give each group a piece of chart paper and markers.
- Ask the groups to draw a diagram of the plant life cycle and label each stage.
- Once the diagrams are complete, have each group present their diagram to the class and explain each stage.
Individual Activity:
- Give each student a piece of construction paper and have them fold it in half.
- Ask the students to draw a picture of a plant at each stage of the life cycle on their paper.
- Have the students cut out each picture and glue them in order on their paper, creating a flip book.
- Label each stage of the life cycle on the flip book.
Wrap-Up:
- Discuss with the class the importance of plants to animals and humans.
- Give each student a cup and a handful of soil.
- Have the students plant a seed in their cup and water it.
- Review the stages of the plant life cycle with the students as they watch their seeds grow.
Assessment:
- Monitor student participation during group and individual activities.
- Review the diagrams and flipbooks created by the students to assess their understanding of the plant life cycle.
- Review the answers to the quiz questions to assess individual understanding.
