Topic:
Asking questions during reading
Standards:
ELACC2RL1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
Essential Question:
What do we know about questioning?
Duration:
About 1 hour
Materials:
chart paper, marker, sentence frames chart, center activities
Overview or notes pertaining to lesson:
Students will use sentence frames and questions to develop deeper understandings of the books being read.
Mini Lesson:
Students bring journals to the floor. We have been practicing asking questions before, during, and after reading and using our mental images. Start a new anchor chart: “Thinking About Questioning”. Put the first question on it: What do we know about questioning? Turn and talk, share and add to anchor chart: We can ask many different questions—who, what, when, where, why, how. Add second question to chart: How does asking questions help us read? Turn and talk, share ideas: understand the text, make connections, etc. Today while you are reading, I want you to continue to ask questions, but I want to you to try to use these sentence frames (displayed on chart): When I read the part about _______, it made me wonder_______. My mental image from this part______ made me wonder about/if/how… This part reminded me of a time when ___________ so I wondered___________. Model this with a book you have read to the class.
Guided Practice:
Allow students to use a sentence frame to share something they wonder about the read-aloud book.
Independent Practice:
After mini lesson start reading groups. I use colors for reading groups so my groups are Green (G), Blue (B), Violet (V), Red (R), Orange (O), Yellow (Y). The rotations are as follows:
These are the activities being done at each rotation: buddy read: ask questions about the book using the sentence frames. Computer:our school uses reading eggs, so I would probably have students do reading eggs on the computer, library/silent read. Me: mini read comprehension: read questions to students. Skill practice: write sentences using the spelling words. Word Study: building sentences center.
Closing:
Share some questions asked with sentence frames.
