Topic: Reading
Standards: ELACC2SL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Duration: about 1 hour
Materials: “The Art Lesson” by Tomie de Paloa, chart paper, marker
Objective or Essential Question: How do we establish a community of readers?
Overview or notes pertaining to lesson: Today students will learn procedures and routines in reading workshop.
Mini Lesson: Read “The Art Lesson” and discuss what a community is and how we all are special members of the classroom community. Tell students to think about something that makes them special that helps them contribute something special to our community. Students will “turn and talk” with a partner next to them, so this will have to be modeled and demonstrated before I allow all students to do this. Chose 2 students to model turning knee to knee, eye to eye, and take turns speaking and listening. After they have done “turn and talk”, have a few students share.
Guided Practice: Allow students to give examples of ways to contribute to the community and discuss proper contributions to the classroom community.
Independent Practice: Students will then go to their seats and draw a picture of themselves and label it with things that make them special or ways that they can contribute to the classroom community. While they work, I would continue to call students over for beginning of the year reading assessments.
Closing: Have few students share their drawings.
