Title: Establishing Reading Workshop-Respect
Topic: Reading/Respect
Standards: ELACC2SL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Duration: about 1 hour
Materials: Pebble Go Video on computer/Smartboard, chart paper, marker
Objective or Essential Question: What is respect, and how do I show respect?
Overview or notes pertaining to lesson: Students learn about respect and how they show respect in our classroom community.
Mini Lesson: Students bring reading journals to the carpet. Start by referring to yesterday’s lesson: everyone is a special part of our community (introduce the word citizen and explain-we also need to know this word for social studies). Today we will learn how to show respect to build our community. Show a short video on pebblego.com–>social studies–>being a good citizen–>respect. Discuss the video and have students share how they
Guided Practice: Guide students in coming up with a list of behaviors that we should show during workshop to show respect (ex: listen, use kind words, help each other, share materials and ideas, cooperate, encourage, etc.). List these behaviors on chart paper titled, “How We Show Respect”. Students copy this list in their notebooks.
Independent Practice: Have students continue adding ways to show respect to their lists and illustrate these ideas. While students are finishing their lists and illustrating independently, you have time to call students for reading records if needed.
Closing: Share some new ideas that students listed independently and finish your list on chart paper.
