Getting Started With Meograph
Meograph is comprised of a very easy to use interface that makes adding data to your timeline a breeze. By default, all stories added will have quick links to an introduction, conclusion and the ability to add moments. For your introduction and conclusion you will be able to add recorded narrations or upload media from your computer to be placed into those areas.
For your moments, you are able to add what, when and where details, as can be seen from the diagram above. Under the “what” section of your Meograph, you are able to add pictures from your computer or video from YouTube. However, under the “when” and “where” section you are able to add optional additional details about that event; when the event took place, a pinpoint of that event on Google Maps or Google Earth and a link to a URL giving additional information about the event.
Possible Applications of Meograph
The applications of Meograph are limitless, however, I believe that there are very viable opportunities in the classroom and journalism-as the site rightfully targets. Events that deal with location and time would particularly benefit from using the Meograph. For example, students who are studying about The Civil War in the United States could use the Meograph to effectively tell the story of the Civil War. On the other hand, Meograph can be used by everyone-whomever has a story to tell and wants to easily share that event with anyone they see fit by adding a timeline, description and media about that event. Therefore, you history and geography buffs will be drooling over this tool.
The Fine Print
As always, I strongly suggest that you read the fine print of any application you use. I was perusing the fine print when I came across this section (Your Registration Obligations). And it reads in part:
…If you are under 13 years of age, you are not authorized to use the Service, with or without registering, unless your school has obtained an education license from Company (http://www.meograph.com/education#extras). In addition, if you are under 18 years old, you may use the Service, with or without registering, only with the approval of your parent or guardian.
Plans
Currently, Meograph has optimized their service to make it an ideal fit for the classroom; at a cost. The service is still free. However, if you want more personalization and control for your entire class or group you will have to fork out at least $20 for the first year.
Conclusion
The Me0graph is a welcome addition to any learning and sharing toolbox. Your events no longer have to be stuck in one, two or three dimensions. You can add a fourth dimension to make your story pop.
