If you’re looking for something sweet and lovely to make for Valentine’s Day, this is the recipe for you.
2 oz red food coloring
4 tbsp baking cocoa
½ c Crisco
1 ½ c sugar
1 c buttermilk
2 ½ c flour sifted
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbs vinegar
1 tsp baking soda
Mix food coloring and cocoa together to make a paste and set aside.
Cream Crisco and sugar.
Add eggs and mix well.
Add food coloring paste, mix well.
Add buttermilk alternately with flour and salt.
Add vanilla and mix well.
Mix together soda and vinegar. As this is foaming, add it to the batter and stir with a spoon.
Pour batter into 2-9in greased and floured pans. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes.
