Title: Math Workshop
Topic: Cooperative Groups
Standards: CCGPS: MCC2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Duration: about 1 hour
Materials: chart paper, marker, math games: salute, subitizing cards
Objective or Essential Question: How do we work in cooperative groups?
Overview or notes pertaining to lesson: Students will learn how to work in cooperative groups during math workshop.
Mini Lesson: Create an anchor chart for Cooperative Groups. Discuss expectations and behaviors: stay on task, speak and write mathematically, be an active listener and participant, respect and organize math materials appropriately. Give examples or model what each of these expectations might look like.
Guided Practice: Spend some time practicing these expectations and behaviors by teaching students some math games such as salute and subitizing cards. Teach, model, and have a couple students practice salute- 3 players, 2 pick a card and put it on their heads. The third person says, “The sum is ___.” The other two students need to race to figure out what their number is on the card on their head. Whoever guess correctly first, wins. Subitizing cards are used like flashcards, so model whisper voices with this game.
Independent Practice: Split students up and allow to practice. Monitor correct play and behavior.
Closing: Discuss things that went well, and anything that we could improve on as it relates to behaviors and expectations of cooperative groups.
