Topic:
Asking questions before, during, and after reading
Standards:
ELACC2RL1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
Essential Question:
What questions do readers ask?
Duration:
About 1 hour
Materials:
chart paper, markers
Overview or notes pertaining to lesson:
Students will learn what the questions words mean, as far as what kind of answer to give for each question word, and how to ask questions before, during, and after reading to better understand a text.
Mini Lesson:
When readers read, they ask questions about their books. It helps the reader understand and learn more from the book. Today we will talk about what kinds of questions a reader might ask. When I read I might ask myself, “Who are the important characters?” Make a chart “Questions Readers Might Ask”. Add that question to the chart. Ask students to think about questions they might ask themselves when they read.
Guided Practice:
Turn and talk, then call on some students to share their questions. Write them on the chart and underline the question words in different colors. My students often get confused about what kind of answer to give for the different question words, so I complete the chart by writing what kind of answer each question word requires. Today you will be asking yourself questions about the book you are reading.
Independent Practice:
After mini lesson start reading groups. I use colors for reading groups so my groups are Green (G), Blue (B), Violet (V), Red (R), Orange (O), Yellow (Y)- see groups’ rotations here. The activities each group will be doing are as follows: Buddy
Read: ask questions about the book with partner, see if you can answer your questions as you read. Computer: our school uses reading eggs, so I would probably have students do reading eggs on the computer or Tumblebooks. Smartboard: short vowel word sort-after sorting, write it in nb and draw pic of the words. Me: give new leveled text, preview book and vocab, practice asking questions using all the question words.
Closing:
Review what kind of answer to give for each question word.
