I am assuming that you have already purchased or own a domain name and hosting. Now that you have those two things taken care of, you will need to make sure that you know your server’s username and password. I will tell you precisely when you will need to enter that information as we go along. Let’s get cracking! First we will install Filezilla.
What is Filezilla Client?
Filezilla Client is an application that allows you to easily manage files that you have hosted on a server. Filezilla is very popular and is pretty widely used. However, they have received some bad press recently because of the fact that if you ask Filezilla to remember your hosting credentials, that information is stored in an easily accessible area of your computer. Consequently, many users have been hacked because of this flaw. The best solution will be to not have FileZilla store your password. Delete that sitemanager.xml file whenever you have completed your management session, and update your virus and malware scanning. Below I will outline what is needed to download and install Filezilla and connect it to your web host’s server in two easy steps.
Step 1: Download and Install Filezilla Client
Go to FileZilla and click on the big grey button called “Download Filezilla Client”. On the next page click on the big green button “Download Now SourceForge”. The download process will begin automatically and you will just follow the directions onscreen.
Step 2: Connect Filezilla to Your Server
You now have Filezilla on your computer. However, you will need to connect Filezilla to your server. To do this you will need the following information:
1-Domain
2-Webhost
3-Username/password
Once you have all of that information you have everything you need to easily connect to your server allowing you to manage your website.
You can connect to you webhost in 2 ways:
1- Using the quickconnect
2- Using the sitemanager.
Using the Quickconnect
In the “Host “field enter one of three things; your site’s IP address, your server address or your domain name. Then you will enter the username and the password associated with your server. And click Quickconnect. All done! You are now on your web server.
Site Manager
The Site Manager can be very useful, especially if you have more than one website. So if you are a teacher, parent or whoever, and you want to give everyone their own website, you can easily do that and manage it from here using the Site Manager.
Click on “File” and from the drop-down select Site Manager. From that screen select new site as shown from the picture above. When the popup screen appears enter your host name as I mentioned earlier. From the area called “Logon Type” from the drop-down menu, select “Normal” and enter your Username and Password.
Finally, click connect and you will now have this site saved in your Filezilla Site Manager.
