If you’re like us, we have had a lot of fruit around the house this summer. We are taking full advantage of all the wonderful peaches, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, watermelon, bananas, pears, and oranges we can find! Unfortunately, all this tasty fruit comes with a price: pesky fruit flies. I have tried putting some of the fruit in the fridge, but they are still around. There are a few things that will help get rid of these fruit fly nuisances.
1. Clean away all fruit juice and residue from surfaces.
2. Take out garbage immediately after throwing away food scraps.
3. Create a fruit fly trap.
After doing 1 and 2, I still had fruit flies, so I tried step 3. To make a trap, simply cut a small hole in a ziploc bag, pour apple cider vinegar in a cup, and place the bag over the cup with the hole in the middle of the cup. Push the hole down into the cup a bit to help prevent the flies from escaping.
This trap lures the flies surprisingly well. There were many flies inside after just an hour. However, I think some have been able to escape. I thought they would go into the vinegar and die, but that has yet to happen. Hopefully the trap will eventually work its magic.
