Objective:

Students will learn about the Wright Brothers, their passion for flight, and their perseverance in pursuing their dreams. They will also be able to recall key information from the book by completing a quiz.

Materials:

• “Can You Fly High, Wright Brothers?” by Melvin and Gilda Berger
  
• Paper and pencils
• Whiteboard and markers
• Pictures and models of airplanes
• Quiz on the book

Procedure:

Introduction:

1. Begin by asking students if they have ever dreamed of flying like a bird. Write their answers on the board on chart paper.
2. Introduce the book “Can You Fly High, Wright Brothers?” by Melvin and Gilda Berger. Show the cover and read the title and author’s name.

Body:

1. Read the book aloud to the class, stopping to discuss and answer questions.
2. Discuss the key points of the book such as who the Wright Brothers were, their childhood, their passion for flight, and their perseverance in pursuing their dreams.
3. Show pictures and models of airplanes and discuss the different parts and how they work.

Conclusion:

1. Review what was learned about the Wright Brothers.
2. Ask students to share what they found interesting or inspiring about the book. They can enter their responses in their journals.
3. Ask students to draw and label their own airplane, including the different parts they learned about.
4. Share the drawings and have a class discussion about each student’s airplane. Encourage students to share their dreams and aspirations and how they can work towards achieving them.
5. Distribute the quiz on the book and have students complete it individually. Collect the quizzes for grading.

Assessment:

Assessment will be based on the accuracy and completeness of the student’s airplane drawings and labeling. Additionally, participation in class discussion and active listening during the reading of the book will be assessed. Students will also be assessed on their understanding of the Wright Brothers’ passion for flight and their perseverance in pursuing their dreams through the quiz.
