Father’s Day Crayon Art Present
A friend of mine told me about crayon melting art and how it’s a great activity to do with little ones. Turns out it is a lot of fun! It also turns out it that it makes a terrific Father’s Day present.
What you will need:
1 Canvas board-your choice of size
Pencil
Many different colored broken crayons with paper taken off
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Permanent marker-your choice of color
Stencils-optional
Hair dryer
Step 1: Sketch
Lightly sketch your heart shape with a pencil. I also lightly stenciled my words inside the heart with pencil to see where it would fit. **You may want to go ahead and do step 4 now, instead of last.
TIP: You may want to cover the inside of the heart with some paper that you tape down. This will keep the crayon from running over where you will write the words. I did not do this step, so some crayon ran over the lettering.
Step 2: Crayons
Lay out the crayons where you want to glue them on the pencil line of the heart. I laid them in rainbow order, but you can do it however you would like. Use the hot glue gun to glue the crayons in place. This can be kind of tricky, because the glue gun melts the crayons.
TIP: I found it easiest to place a little line of glue on the canvas and then stick the crayon to it.
Step 3: Blow Dryer
When the hot glue has dried, it is time to turn the dryer on. I chose to have my crayons melt out toward the sides of the canvas. Simply point the dryer in the direction you would like the crayons to melt and run. Changing direction and angle of the dryer can create some neat designs. Experiment and be creative! I rotated the canvas as I worked to make sure all crayons melted out toward the edges of the canvas.
Step 4: Words
The last thing I did was darken the words with the stencils using a permanent marker. I guess this step could probably be done in step 1, before melting the crayons. This time I decided to do it last. It worked out, but I had a little bit of trouble with some of the letters, because the crayon ran across them.
All done! Hope you and all the dads who receive this enjoy! I know it has been a great gift in our house.
