Disturbing Realization about Canned Beans
I was reading an article about foods to avoid at all costs, and of course foods with preservatives were on the list. I took a look in my pantry and I had not realized just how many preservatives we consume daily! It’s very disturbing. To add to this harsh realization was another thing I discovered: not all companies need to add these preservatives.
I was looking at my canned beans. I have been making more recipes that include beans, because we have been cutting meat out of our diet. I have a can of Bushes white beans, Goya white beans, and Rega white beans. Don’t ask me why I ended up buying all of these different brands, but I noticed something very important.
Bushes adds preservatives for color and an ingredient to preserve firmness. Goya and Rega don’t add any preservatives! Why is it that Bushes feels the need to add 2 different preservatives that could cause major health problems for anyone that eats them, while the other two companies don’t need to add any preservatives and the beans taste and look the same in my eyes!?! I would buy only bagged beans, but that requires a lot more pre-planning to soak the beans and cook them. I don’t have time for that. Needless to say, I will be spending the extra couple of cents to buy the preservative free canned beans from now on.
