Title: Writing Workshop Procedures
Topic: Writing
Standards: ELACC2SL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Duration: about 1 hour
Materials: chart paper, marker, copies of pictures of procedures
Objective or Essential Question: What are the procedures for writing workshop?
Overview or notes pertaining to lesson: Students learn the parts of writer’s workshop.
Mini Lesson: Students bring writer’s journal to the floor. Remind students we will become writers this year and use our writer’s notebook to write all of our ideas. In order to become great writers we need to establish a routine for writing. Make anchor chart “Procedures for Writer’s Workshop”. Divide the chart paper into 4 quadrants and write the procedures: listen and learn during mini lesson; share ideas and listen to other’s ideas; write, write, write until workshop is over; be respectful of others. I like to do this chart with 4 big quadrants on the piece of paper. There are also little pictures that go along with each rule for a visual. I have students create the quadrant, glue the pictures, and write the procedures.
Guided Practice: Ask students what you would need to do to demonstrate each of those rules. Guide students to something similar to: Listen and Learn: eyes on teacher, show rug rules, etc.; Share ideas..: Raise your hand, talk to your partner during turn and talk, look at the person you are talking with, etc.; Write, write..: do your best writing, etc.; respectful: write quietly, don’t disturb others writing, etc.
Closing: Review procedures and role play as necessary.
